There are four main ways for coffee to be decaffeinated. The first way is with the use of chemical solvents. This can be done directly, by washing the beans in the solvent, or indirectly, by mixing the solvent with the caffeinated water that the beans have soaked in. The second method is the Swiss Water Process. In this process the beans are soaked in water which then extracts the caffeine into the water. The water is then run through carbon filters to remove the caffeine. After being filtered, the coffee flavored water is reintroduced to the now decaf beans. The third process is newer, using pressurized carbon dioxide to extract the caffeine using gas and evaporation. The fourth process is called the EA Sugarcane Process. In this process Ethyl Acetate (EA), which can be sourced from sugarcane, is used to remove the caffeine from coffee beans. The beans are soaked in water and ethyl acetate and the EA bonds to the caffeine thus leaving you with decaffeinated beans. Our decaf beans use the EA Sugar Cane Process.
